History |
The
Banyan Tree Golf Course, formerly known as the Kadena Golf
Course opened on December 17, 1960. Costs of the
18-hole facility were defrayed from non-appropriated funds
accruing from such activities as sports events, golf driving
ranges, exchanges, etc. The course was constructed largely
on reclaimed land, none of which was utilized as farming
areas by Okinawan farmers. Air Force officials estimated
that the operation and maintenance of the facility eventually
will provide jobs for at least 100 to 150 Okinawan employees.
